Why Be Fit?

Does your physical conditioning keep you from living a pain-free life? Does it keep you from doing your job effectively? Are you stressed and unhealthy? Individuals who are not physically fit have more health problems than those who are. I know that you've heard this a million times but consider this: does your current physical condition lose you credibility every time you step into the board room, stand on the side line at your child's sporting event or worse yet, does the predator look at you and know that you are a sheep ripe for the picking?

There are many advantages to being in shape, but the ability to deal with life's every day stress is most important. Military and law enforcement special operations groups have proven that the more physically conditioned you are, the better you will handle the effects of combat stress before, during and after the threat ends. Stress can do terrible things to us. Under the stress of a confrontation, we are likely to respond in one of three ways - fight, flight, or freeze. Freezing is obviously the biggest problem, and not responding to a deadly threat will certainly cause you to have a bad day in Disneyland! Being physically fit will give you a leg up on your competition and help you respond appropriately. Obviously, the most appropriate response for a violent confrontation is to create distance.

Physical conditioning involves several components - flexibility, strength, aerobic/anaerobic capacity, healthy eating habits, and proper rest. You do not have to run six miles every day, lift weights twice a day and eat roots and sprouts only. Workout three times a week for at least one hour, include weight and flexibility training as well as aerobic/anaerobic activity. Combine these with healthy eating habits and you have a great start on a new lifestyle of fitness. If your current physical abilities are lacking, get with one of your fit friends and ask how he or she stays in shape.

If you do not have a fit friend, a great place to start is Crossfit©. I promise you, if you start out slow and stick with the Crossfit© concepts, you WILL get fit. Make sure you go to your doctor and get a physical before participating in strenuous activity, especially if you've been sedentary for a while. Find a certified personal trainer. Start a program slowly and continue it for the rest of your life. You will be happier and healthier.
